As a guest, a sold-out club night lasts just a few hours. For those working behind the scenes, however, the night begins much earlier and often does not end when the lights come back on.So what actually happens inside one of Budapest’s most iconic clubs before the dance floor fills up?
Before the Doors Open
There is a brief moment before every party when Ötkert shows a completely different side of itself. There is no queue at the entrance yet and the dance floor is still empty, but behind the scenes, everyone is already at work.
The bars are stocked, drinks and ingredients are prepared, tills are checked, and the sound and lighting systems are tested. The DJ booth and VIP tables are set up, reservations are finalised, and the entire team is briefed for the night ahead.Everyone has their own role to play, making sure that by the time the first guests arrive, everything is exactly where it needs to be and the night can get off to a smooth start.

When several thousand people pass through our doors over a single weekend, keeping everything running smoothly requires an entire team working in sync.Bartenders, hostesses, security staff, technicians, DJs and the managers coordinating them all work towards the same goal: making sure guests barely notice the complex operation happening behind the scenes.
It may sound strange, but sometimes that is the best sign that we have done our job well. If there are no delays at the entrance, drinks arrive on time, situations are handled before they turn into real problems, the sound and lighting work flawlessly throughout the night, and the club still has the same energy at dawn as it did at midnight, then everything is working exactly as it should.

During the first few hours after opening, the night gradually builds, and then suddenly, everything picks up pace. The bars and dance floor fill up, VIP orders start coming in, the ice runs low, and the music shifts with the mood of the crowd.At that point, there is no time for lengthy discussions. A glance, a hand signal or a few words are often enough. After hundreds of nights working side by side, the team knows exactly when and where help is needed.
Expect the Unexpected
When hundreds of people come together for a night out, no two evenings are ever exactly the same. Hungarian and international guests arrive with different tastes, needs and expectations, which means the atmosphere and dynamics of the night can shift at any moment.
Sometimes the DJ has to step outside their comfort zone when the set planned for the beginning of the night does not connect with the crowd quite as expected. At other times, the weather can change the entire plan within minutes. If a sudden downpour hits, the team needs to react quickly. Ötkert’s retractable cabrio roof stays open when the weather is good, but if conditions change, the staff can close it at the touch of a button within minutes.
Meanwhile, constant communication continues between the different teams behind the scenes. Ideally, all the guests notice is that within a few minutes, everything is back on track and the night carries on as usual.Perhaps that is one of the most important skills in this industry: knowing how to react quickly without ever disrupting the guest experience.
